Happy Easter

I knew Easter was something to do with the Full Moon and is therefore a moveable feast. Because it occurs in Spring in the Northern Hemisphere many of the Easter symbols of new life and light make sense. It doesn't have the same impact for us down under although we take those images and symbols on board. Christ, because he lives, offers each one of us his light to guide us and his life to sustain us.

This year the 2026 equinox was March 20. It marked an unofficial beginning of spring for the Northern Hemisphere and autumn for the Southern Hemisphere. The first full moon after the March equinox arrived overnight on April 1-2, 2026. That is why this year, Easter falls on this day, April 5th, the 1st Sunday after that full moon.

I'm reminding you of this to set the stage for the song I want to share with you this week, 'The moon is full on our feast.' Some of you will know the song because I have shared it before. The title is taken from Psalm 80 (81) written long before the life, death and resurrection of Jesus but suitably apt to pray and proclaim on this Easter Day.

'Raise a song and sound the timbrel

the sweet-sounding harp and the lute

blow the trumpet and the new moon

when the moon is full, on our feast .'

Easter is the Church's greatest feast and the moon is indeed full at this time.

May it be a joyous festival for you and your loved ones. The world is desperately in need of the life and light that Jesus brings. He is risen and he is with us.
