Duck Pond at the Wellington Botanical Gardens
Duck Pond at the Wellington Botanical Gardens

Water and beauty attract people. The Wellington Botanical Gardens is a beautiful place to visit on a fine day. Lots of people take a walk up to the Duck Pond which is pictured here. I sat in the shade on a park bench and met a father with his young twins, around 3 years old, in a pram visiting the pond. To listen to the children calling out duckie, duckie not to the ducks but to the pigeons that came up to them perched on the railing was delightful. The father told me his children had never seen ducks before and I was taken by their absolute joy in seeing the birds. Children remind us to stop and to see things as for the first time.

I couldn't help think about today's Gospel passage from John 4:5-42, which I was reflecting on, about the woman at the well. I was tired from my walk and was sitting down at the pond. Jesus was tired from his journey and sat straight down by the well. He met a Samaritan woman and I met a father with an English accent and his children. The Scriptures have a way of

making links for us. I smiled to myself.

Of course Jesus went on to have one of the most powerful and significant conversations we have in the Scriptures with the Samaritan woman. He changed her life and enabled her to receive the living water he was offering her which in turn sent her off to tell others about what had happened to her and who she had met at the well.

Water and beauty attract us. Jesus gazing directly at us is offering us living water to cleanse, quench our thirst and transform our lives. Maybe we can sit with him today for a little while, place ourselves at the well and listen to what he has to say to us.

Perhaps the passage from the Gospel will help us to focus on the one we are listening to.

'The woman said to him, 'I know that the Messiah.....is coming; and when he comes he will tell us everything.' I who am speaking to you,' said Jesus 'I am he.'

Blessings on your week.

The song I am sharing with you this week is the 'The Milford Blessing.'
