"Christ in the House of Martha and Mary" by Johannes Vermeer.

The famous encounter of Jesus with Martha and Mary from Luke 10:38-42 has received much attention regarding the different responses the two women give to Jesus. Surely, both responses are needed. Providing food and drink is essential but also taking time to sit, converse and listen to our visitors is essential too. We know that a household needs everyone to play there part for things to run smoothly.

The important thing to remember is that people feel welcome. And we do that in various ways.

In the Gospel we hear that it was Martha who welcomed Jesus into her house. What a blessing and gift for her and what a blessing and gift for us to welcome Jesus into the home of our hearts in prayer and in a real and bodily sense with the food of the Eucharist but also through the kindness and hospitality shown to a brother or sister in need.

What a gift and blessing for Mary, Martha’s sister, to sit at the feet of Jesus and listen to him. Jesus commends her for this. Mary was drawn to Jesus and his teaching. You get the sense that she didn’t want to miss out and wanted to take it all in. We need to have that desire too. A true disciple sits at the feet of Jesus to share what they have heard, received, and taken to heart.

Are you able to sit with Jesus now or some time today to experience his welcome and generosity? We are invited to sit down with him away from the heat of the day whatever that may be in our lives and to receive from him. What is it that you need to hear and receive from him?

The song I have chosen for you this week is my version of 'Be still for the presence of the Lord'

Blessings on your week.
