Come to me

Yesterday as a community we had a quiet day of reflection. I shared my song ‘Bid me come down,’ based on the story of Zacchaeus, the tax collector who climbed the tree to get a glimpse of Jesus. With that on my mind reflecting on the Gospel of today, his longing to encounter Jesus and to come down out of the tree is answered with the words of Jesus gently saying, ‘Come to me all you who labour and are heavy burdened and I will give you rest.’ It was if it was an answer to prayer.

It made me think of other instances of invitation in the Scriptures. Rabbi where do you live and Jesus answering, ‘Come and see from John’s Gospel to Bartimaeus the blind beggar. Get up he is calling to you….’and then the plea from our side, ‘Maranatha, Come Lord Jesus from Revelations and the traditional hymn, ‘Come Holy Ghost, creator come.’ You may be able to think of other examples. Jesus asks us to come to him and inspires us to ask him to come to us

What a beautiful synchronicity and communion there is when the invitation of Jesus which is always on offer and the desire of our hearts to be one with him, at home with him, united with him, resting in him with all the burdens and trials we are asked to carry match up.

May we be reassured by his voice today to come to him and never tire of his invitation.

I have opened the song, ‘Bid me come down,’ on my website for you to reflect on and pray with.

Blessings on your week.
