In my younger days, I used to do a lot of tramping around many of Aotearoa's great walks.
Our packs were relatively full when we started out and progressively got lighter as we ate through our food rations. When the food became less interesting and limited, we began to fantasize about all the fresh food we were going to have when we got back into town. And when we did arrive, we celebrated our endurance and achievement sharing a delicious meal together. They were wonderful days.
Food is such an important aspect of our lives and of course food for our spiritual journey. The prophet Elijah in 1 Kings 19:4-8, wishing he was dead, was encouraged 'to get up and eat, or the journey will be too long for you.' And he did get up and reached the mountain of God.
At times, what we are asked to face in life seems beyond us but somehow we get through. You maybe in the thick of something now. May today's scripture strengthen your resolve to keep going.
In the Gospel taken from John 6:41-51, Jesus identifying himself as the living bread come down from heaven, is boldly announcing who he really is and reassuring us that communion with him is what will enable us to keep going. He gives us his very flesh to nourish and sustain us.
You may like to listen to Psalm 120, 'I lift my eyes to the mountains.'
Blessings on your week.
