Then the Lord himself went by......

The prophet Elijah in today's first reading from 1 Kings 19:9, 11-13 went up to the mountain of God and experienced the presence of God in the gentle breeze outside the cave entrance.

This weekend I have been involved in giving a retreat with the theme, Stillness, Silence and Song. Going up onto the mountain of God, entering a cave, spending the night and being present to the Lord actually passing by captures something of a retreat experience for me.

The silence, stopping to be still for a while and the songs and music shared are a means to encounter God not in loud or earth-shattering ways but like a gentle breeze. Like a whisper, a felt grace, a gentle stirring within.

Elijah sensed God’s presence, covered his face, and went to the entrance of the cave and that is what we are called to be open and sensitive to. All we need to do is be present, be generous and grateful.

We are reminded in the Gospel of Jesus walking on the water from Matthew 14:22-33 that our lives are not always easy, we encounter storms, head winds, doubts and fears but Jesus does not abandon us although we may think so and question where he is.

As the wind rages and the storm rocks and rolls disturbing our inner peace are we able to hear that still, gentle and quiet voice that is always there? 'Courage, it is I, do not be afraid, Come to me.'

You may have an image that comes to mind that reassures you that Christ is present. It maybe his hand reaching out towards you as he reached out and saved Peter from being overwhelmed by the waves. It maybe the memory of someone who comforted or supported you at a time of need. Whatever it is, be present and grateful for it.
