St Paul’s greeting in today's Sunday reading is a fitting beginning for our feast today, 'may the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you…..he invites us to become aware of the profound reality of God’s grace and that it is through the very life of the Trinity that grace is communicated to us.
We have probably lost the memory of our learning how to make the sign of the cross, but I still have the memory of my siblings teaching their children how to sign themselves. It is delightful seeing some little ones getting mixed up and using the wrong hand or going from right to left inatead of left to right. However, we see their openness and innocence acknowledging God as Trinity and learning that beautiful Catholic practice which we carry through the whole of our lives.
Everything we do when we gather in prayer is done in the name of the Trinity and with the sign of the cross, we are reminded of what Christ did for our sake.
In the first line of the Gospel today John 3:16 we hear, ‘God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not be lost but may have eternal life.’ The gift of the Son was a complete offering witnessed by his death on the cross out of love for us.
God loved the world so much… and that means the whole of creation. The outpouring of creative love which is the life force and dynamism of the Trinity is an outpouring of love for all things and all people because all people matter to God.
God sent his only Son and as sons and daughters of God deeply loved we too are sent out to share the love we have received, a love that accepts, forgives, builds up, unites, consoles, stands up and stands with, heals and values.
The life of God as Trinity, a Communion of persons, is beyond our imaginings and understanding but let’s keep imagining and growing in understanding. God desires to come close to us and be at home within us. The Scriptures constantly remind us.
In faith we do believe that the Father loved the world so much that he sent his only Son and that the grace of the Holy Spirit has been poured into our hearts. We celebrate and give thanks for that today and always.
