Being genuine

Lavender in full bloom in our back garden.

Jesus has a great insight into our hearts and our intentions. He knows when we are being real or trying to deceive ourselves. He allows us to hide from him but he knows where we are. I am reminded of Psalm 139 'Lord you search me and you know me. You know my thoughts from afar.....where can I go from your spirit?'

Jesus shows his insightfulness in today's Gospel taken from Mark 12:28-34.

For once we have a genuine scribe searching for what is essential in living a Godly life.

The scribe asks him, 'what is the first of all the commandments?'

Jesus recognizers how genuine this searcher is before him. He answers him clearly and plainly

unlike those times where the scribes were out to trap him.

In the thoughtful encounter that takes place between them Jesus says to him, 'You are not far from the Kingdom of God.' What reassuring words to hear.

What is the question we would like to ask Jesus today? He knows the one we need to ask. Ask him to put it into words for you. We too can have a thoughtful encounter with him like the Scribe. When we approach him from a genuine place seeking understanding and a way forward we too can hear those words, 'You are not far from the kingdom of God.'
